Overflowing gutters do not automatically mean you need new gutters, and a clean will not fix every leak. The useful starting point is where the water appears: over the edge, through a joint, or around a downpipe. Describe that to Sam before booking so the quote addresses the fault you have noticed rather than assuming that clearing leaves will solve it.

Start with where the water appears

Watch from a safe place at ground level. Water coming over a gutter edge, dripping through the same joint or pooling at the foot of a downpipe gives different information. Note whether it happens in light rain, only in a downpour, or after the roof drainage has already been cleaned.

Details to describe when requesting a quote, not a diagnosis
What you noticeWhat to tell us
Water over the gutter edgeWhere it spills, whether debris is visible and when it was last cleared.
A drip through a joint or sectionThe exact spot, visible damage and whether it persists after cleaning.
Water around a downpipe at ground levelWhere it backs up and whether nearby ground or drainage pits are affected.

These observations help describe the job. They do not prove the cause from a distance. Several faults can produce similar symptoms, and more than one issue can be present at the same property.

When gutter cleaning is the relevant starting point

If the issue is debris restricting the gutter or downpipe, clearing that debris is a different proposal from replacing sound metal. Tell us about nearby trees, how long it has been since the last clean, and whether there are roof valleys or separate sections involved.

TGG’s gutter-cleaning service clears gutters by hand, checks and flushes downpipes, takes away the mess and supplies before-and-after photos. The photos document the work on your gutters, not a generic example from a different house.

For the current residential estimate bands and the questions that affect them, read TGG’s gutter-cleaning cost guide. A price for cleaning should describe cleaning; it should not quietly imply that all leaks or drainage defects are included.

When to ask about repair or replacement

A leaking joint or damaged section can remain a problem even when the gutter is clear. If you have a visible split, rusted area or repeated leak from one spot, mention it in the enquiry instead of selecting a clean and hoping it will disappear.

TGG offers minor gutter repairs and gutter installation. Describe the condition and provide any safe ground-level photos so Sam can consider the appropriate scope. A repair quote and a replacement quote need to be based on what is actually there; this guide is not a remote assessment of whether your gutter can be repaired.

If the problem continued after a previous clean, say so. That history is useful context, but it does not by itself establish poor workmanship or identify which component is at fault.

Keep downpipes and underground drainage distinct

Water around the base of a downpipe needs a careful description. It may concern the roof-drainage path, a connection or a different drainage issue below ground. Downpipe cleaning should not be described as a guarantee to resolve every underground stormwater fault.

Tell us if a street pit, shared drain or neighbouring surface is involved. For an apparent public drainage issue, use the relevant council reporting channel. For example, Parramatta Council’s drainage reporting page separates council-land and private-land enquiries. That example does not determine responsibility at every Sydney property.

A better enquiry is more useful than a guessed diagnosis

Send the property height, roof material, access restrictions and the location of the overflow. A short description such as “water drips through the rear gutter joint even after the last clean” is more useful than simply saying “the gutters are broken”. Include when you first noticed it and whether it has changed.

Do not climb onto a roof or use a ladder in wet weather to investigate for a quote. SafeWork NSW advises working from ground level wherever possible. Quote photos can be taken from a safe position, and an access plan can be considered as part of the work.

For common-property gutters, ask the strata contact to agree the scope before booking. The strata gutter-cleaning checklist covers the practical details to gather.

Common questions

Will cleaning fix a leaking gutter joint?

Not necessarily. Clearing debris and repairing a faulty joint are different tasks. Mention the leak before booking so the quote can address it.

Should I replace gutters that overflow?

Overflow alone is not enough to decide. The location, condition and drainage path need assessment before choosing cleaning, repair or replacement.

What photos should I send?

Ground-level photos showing the affected section, roof height and available access are useful. Do not climb onto the roof to collect them.
